Foster Grandparent/Senior Companion Program

Foster Grandparent

The Foster Grandparent Program

The Department of Developmental Services (DDS) is an AmeriCorps Seniors grantee and receives funds through their Foster Grandparent Program. DDS operates the Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion Programs in 21 counties throughout California.

The Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) engages volunteers, ages 55 and over, to serve as role models, mentors, and friends to children with developmental disabilities and exceptional needs. Foster grandparents volunteer in community schools, Head Start centers, pre-schools, local day programs or adult day health care centers

SGPRC volunteers play a crucial role in the lives of nearly 50 children with special needs. They serve as mentors, tutors, coaches, and companions, providing invaluable 1:1 attention. This personalized support is transformative academically and emotionally for the students they work with.

“The Foster Grandparent Program has made a remarkable impact since its inception in 1965, starting with 800 volunteers across 45 institutions. Today, it has grown significantly, with nearly 30,000 volunteers supporting over 280,000 children nationwide through CNCS-affiliated organizations.

Senior Companion

The Senior Companion Program began in 1974 and throughout participating organizations in communities across the nation; Senior Companions have provided crucial assistance to older adults. The volunteers at SGPRC serve over 50 Adults with special needs daily.  They help to mentor, train, coach and become a companion to the adults.  The 1:1 attention that the adults receive makes a huge difference in them retaining much of their independence.
