CAPTAIN (California Autism Professional Training and Information Network)
Dear Parents,
During these unprecedented times you son/daughter might be exhibiting challenging behaviors since their daily routines have drastically changed (they are no longer able to attend school, go to the mall, movies, or other). If your son/daughter is experiencing an increase in challenging behaviors, this resource from CAPTAIN (California Autism Professional Training and Information Network) which focuses on Evidence Based Practices for individuals might be helpful for you!
You can start by:
A. Reviewing our AFIRM Behavioral Modules: https://afirm.fpg.unc.edu/afirm-modules (FREE) suggested AFIRM Modules:
- Visual Supports
- Antecedent Based Interventions
- Reinforcement
B. Encourage the Use of Visual Supports:
We have curated a variety of free printable visual supports for you to use and share.
Here is the link to the visual supports folder:
Visual Supports (PRINTABLE)
C. Provide Distance Coaching:
Consider using FaceTime, Zoom or other digital communication platforms to provide families virtual coaching on these evidence based practices for ASD.
This can be done by:
- Your current ABA provider OR
- SG/PRC’s BCBA Behavioral Support team.
- Contact your service coordinator for Behavioral Support
Coaching might include guidance on how to develop and create the structure and visual supports our individuals with Autism need by encouraging the development and implementation of the following:
- Visual schedule: create a schedule of each day to increase structure, decrease anxiety, support independence, etc.
- Mini-task schedules: (e.g., getting dressed, taking a bath/shower; brushing teeth, making a snack, completing their schoolwork, getting ready for bed, etc.)
- Choiceboards: (e.g., choices for foods/drinks, etc.; school work completion; activities to do during breaks from school work; leisure/recreation activities; self-regulation strategies, etc.)
- Positive Behavior Supports: reinforcement cards; If/Then or First/Then; behavior rules cards, etc.
